One of the more interesting questions we occasionally get asked is “are Bengal cats worth the money?”
Basically, people want to know before buying if Bengal cats are worth the additional price.
It’s common knowledge that Bengal cats are relatively expensive to buy – especially compared to other pedigree cats.
People will often spend hundreds, sometimes even thousands on Bengal cats.
So, are Bengal cats worth the money?
Ultimately, this is one of those difficult “how long is a piece of string” questions.
Without sugar coating it, at the end of the day a Bengal cat is just a cat.
You can probably go to your local SPCA or kitten shelter and get a cat or kitten for free, or next to nothing.
So what is the difference with a Bengal? And is the difference worth the money?
In our opinion, the biggest differences and elements of attraction for paying the premium for Bengal ownership are:
- Looks – There is no doubt that Bengal cats are some of the most stunning, beautiful cats on earth. While most cats are “cute”, there is something about the way that Bengals look that is very alluring to many. Bengal owners who value the looks of their cats will gladly pay the extra money required for this alone.
- Community – One overlooked aspect of Bengal ownership is that there are strong communities (both online and offline) of Bengal owners, fanciers etc. For example, there are very active Bengal cat owner and enthusiast groups on Facebook. In fact, we are in the process of setting one up ourselves. You may find this community aspect to be worth the additional price of ownership.
- Personality & Intelligence – Bengals are intelligent, inquisitive cats that are often very playful and energetic. If you want a cat that is highly entertaining to have around the home (albeit sometimes stressful/challenging) then once again you may be happy to pay a premium to achieve this via owning a Bengal cat.
To conclude, are Bengal cats worth the money
Ultimately, this is a very difficult question to answer as “value is in the eye of the beholder”.
After all, what is worth nothing to someone may be worth a lot to someone else. Many of the things that are appealing about Bengal cats are highly subjective.
However, despite their generally high price tag, we reckon that Bengal cats are definitely worth the “price of admission”.
