In this article, we look at whether or not Bengal cats need special care.
If you’re considering getting a Bengal cat, then you will want to know if it is going to require any form of special care beyond what you would give to a “normal” cat.
Maybe you’ve read online that Bengals need a lot of attention and looking after, and this is putting you off the idea of Bengal ownership.
So, what is the truth? Do Bengal cats need special care?
In our opinion they do not. Bengal cats don’t really require any more particular care than any other type of cat.
There are a lot of urban legends, myths, and misunderstandings when it comes to Bengal cats. The truth is that Bengals aren’t some kind of mystical beasts – they are cats.
However, Bengals do tend to demonstrate a few characteristics that you need to consider:
- Bengal cats can be very “attention seeking” in their behaviour. Do bear this in mind, as your Bengal is probably going to want a lot of attention. If you’re the kind of person who just wants a largely “ornamental” cat that sits there and doesn’t do much, then you might want to look elsewhere.
- Bengal cats require a lot of attention to be given to the state of their litter. You will need to provide a good quality litter box (read our guide to the best litter boxes for Bengal cats for more info) as well as access to fresh litter (read our guide to the best litter for Bengal cats as well). This is something that is really important to get right. Bengals simply seem to be a lot fussier about their litter than other cats often are.
- Bengals can sometimes be picky eaters – read our guide here to the best food for Bengal cats for more information about what you might want to consider feeding your Bengal.
- Some owners report frustration with the fact that their Bengals vocalise a lot. Excessive vocalisation does seem to be a common trait for Bengal cats, so consider if this is something you’ll be happy with. If you want a cat that is going to be seen and not heard, then you may wish to consider another breed.
Do Bengal cats really need special care compared to other types of cats?
Probably not.
However, there are some things you want to consider when it comes to Bengal cat ownership and whether or not it will be suitable for you. Make sure you read the guides on this website for more information.
Remember, Bengal cat ownership is a long-term proposition.
You don’t want to purchase a Bengal cat because it seems like a good idea now, but find yourself quickly tiring of the process.
